Joseph Davidson has saved up for years for a chance to go to space. He's played every simulator and watched every vid. He thinks he's ready for anything.

He's wrong.

In short order he finds out he's bitten off more than he can chew. As he tries to earn enough to buy his best friend a ship, he ends up drafted into Novel service, fighting off alien invasions, and being mistaken for a retired pirate hunter.
